          <body><div><p>The building is located on the main city’s avenue - the <placeName xml:id="recogito-416a3051-52d6-4d61-aa8c-ef06544319a2" ana="#street" cert="low">Korzo</placeName> - and is characterized by one of the most recognizable balconies in the city centre, while its other facade looks on to the <rs xml:id="recogito-a59c154b-2cc2-4d21-b9fe-7068dfc51184" type="event">Rijeka Resolution</rs> square. It is one of the most noteworthy buildings in <placeName ref="http://sws.geonames.org/3191648" xml:id="recogito-e7997b32-c4b2-46a8-bb37-4085e49cc7f4" cert="high">Rijeka</placeName>, and it went through many political transformations during the twentieth century.
It was built in 1863, following the plan of the architect <persName xml:id="recogito-4699a75c-c38d-4b05-9a3a-d201ccbe0c8a" ana="#architect">Antonio Deseppi</persName>, and it initially housed the “<span xml:id="recogito-dd936947-cb41-433c-a7b9-337858e7cee6" ana="#Casino">Casinò patriottico</span>” and the <span xml:id="recogito-1a6019bf-62a0-48be-a8c5-183789941d91" ana="#Society">Società filodrammatica</span>. From 1890, the building housed the “<span xml:id="recogito-245af15a-7ae2-4f2e-aa3c-415ff643af22" ana="#cultural institution">Narodna čitaonica</span>” (the People’s/national reading room), becoming the most important cultural center of the Croatian-Slavic life in the city. Important decisions for the <span xml:id="recogito-89feeac2-ca64-4e5c-9e52-bb239ba6c189" ana="#national community #ethnic community">Croatian community</span> were taken in this building, such as the <rs xml:id="recogito-076b9ac6-c08d-4c40-b972-f18dc95d018b" type="event">Rijeka Resolution</rs> in 1905: a political agreement aimed at establishing a political coalition between <span xml:id="recogito-2f01975b-239f-4a9d-b5c0-2ce413c1dce9" ana="#political party">Croatian and Serbian parties</span> in the Austro-Hungarian political arena. In 1918, when the <placeName ref="http://geo-kima.org/place/6860" xml:id="recogito-10669ac0-a981-4be3-a58f-54e943662487" cert="high">Austro-Hungarian empire</placeName> was collapsing and possession of <placeName ref="http://sws.geonames.org/3191648" xml:id="recogito-6e0eb1f8-3f4d-499d-a805-1c865cfb1efb" cert="high">Rijeka</placeName> became a point of contention between <placeName ref="http://geo-kima.org/place/6258" xml:id="recogito-9136b667-cfd5-46e4-ac48-0da251dc7a07" cert="high">Italy</placeName> and the new <placeName xml:id="recogito-087a2ef0-e80b-48de-80d9-36a9e5883cec" cert="low">Yugoslav state</placeName>, it was in this building that the <span xml:id="recogito-efbc5002-f14c-4971-9cfc-5edcab865210" ana="#political body">Croatian/South Slavic national council</span> declared the annexation to the <placeName xml:id="recogito-eedb1f97-1519-4b20-8f1a-7cf80778f2b4" cert="low">Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes</placeName>.
<placeName ref="http://sws.geonames.org/3191648" xml:id="recogito-fc389401-f0b2-4f3c-8374-4de53a19651e" cert="high">Rijeka</placeName> was however annexed by <placeName ref="http://geo-kima.org/place/6258" xml:id="recogito-59824e6b-ba92-4e53-8221-5abfb9c89278" cert="high">Italy</placeName>, and subsequently the building served to maintain a connection with the <span xml:id="recogito-f0b735d4-90c6-4486-a2f3-7d6ce996970d" ana="#ethnic community">South Slavic population</span> of the city, alongside the <span xml:id="recogito-1487e42b-00f7-420a-87f3-b8f9064545ea" ana="#State institution">Consulate of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes</span>. In 1930, however, it was turned into the headquarters of the <span xml:id="recogito-e762b361-03f5-400b-ad9e-40d0860af835" ana="#political party">Italian Fascist Party</span>: the “Casa del Fascio”. After the <rs xml:id="recogito-ebe092e7-98fe-48e7-80b6-22c38ac9ca69" type="event">Second World War</rs>, its role changed again. Since 1951 it has been the headquarters of <span xml:id="recogito-aec1fd9d-d4a0-4998-8145-c336cb299b25" ana="#Radio station">Radio Rijeka</span>, originally broadcasting both in <span xml:id="recogito-4079a2ae-9bb5-4998-b43e-149f299f4be9" ana="#language">Croatian</span> and <span xml:id="recogito-ab8ed6ea-f2c2-4f54-a504-83a379226cb7" ana="#language">Italian languages</span>.
In the fifties, two <span xml:id="recogito-13adcc4a-851b-4922-8067-07cd798d68e8" ana="#commemorative plaque">commemorative plaques</span> were unveiled on the building, aimed at memorialising the building's role in Croatian history. The first celebrates the <rs xml:id="recogito-b7f8a5d2-90e1-4bfd-b378-2abbe2f44b9b" type="event">Resolution of Rijeka</rs>, while the second celebrates the literary journal <span xml:id="recogito-07f61cb3-0e01-4af8-b755-49625a932f2e" ana="#literary journal">Neven</span> and the first century of the Croatian press in the city of <placeName ref="http://sws.geonames.org/3191648" xml:id="recogito-2f61a7d2-968d-4552-8e59-ebf7846fc361" cert="high">Rijeka</placeName>. The Čitaonica is still housed in the building. Another section of the building, called the <span xml:id="recogito-3204e8a2-083c-4681-83c9-26ae53a92c08" ana="#art gallery">Mali Salon</span> was a space for art exhibitions established after <rs xml:id="recogito-9920d6e6-37b9-4cab-b7e4-987f58c458f0" type="event">World War II</rs> and one of the main expressions of city’s artistic life on <placeName xml:id="recogito-a474dbd0-70a7-4fe8-82fd-d1c5870b698d" ana="#street" cert="low">Korzo</placeName>. Sadly, it was closed in 2019.</p></div></body>
