O The O newspaper O was O established O during O the O Second O World O War O as O one O of O several O partisan O publications O in O Italian O in O the O region O that O were O duplicated O by O cyclostyle O a O small O machine O and O ancestor O to O the O photocopier O that O was O used O by O many O resistance O movements O across O Europe. O La O Voce O was O named O after O an O 19th O century O newspaper O from O Fiume O and O the O first O number O was O issued O on O October O 27 O 1944. O In O May O 1945 O after O the O end O of O the O war O La O Voce O del O Popolo O started O to O be O published O daily O becoming O the O newspaper O of O the O Italian O minority O in O Yugoslavia. O It O was O under O the O control O of O the O Communist O Party O and O expressed O the O political O line O of O the O new O authorities O but O it O also O became O one O of O the O main O expressions O of O the O cultural O and O intellectual O life O of O the O Italian O community O in O Rijeka O and O in B-LOC Istria. B-PER Later O la B-PER Voce I-PER del O Popolo O suffered O as O a O result O of O changes O in O Yugoslavia's O policies B-LOC towards I-LOC national O minorities O and B-PER was I-PER downsized. I-PER Nevertheless O it O continued O to O be O financially O supported O and O published O as O a O daily O newspaper O despite O the O constant O numerical O decline O of O the O Italian O minority O population O in O Yugoslavia. O After O the O disgragation O of O Socialist O Yugoslavia O in O the O new O Independent O Croatia O the B-LOC publishing I-LOC house O of O La O Voce O del O Popolo O Edit O was O privatized. O Since O 2001 O it O is O owned O by O the O Italian O Union O and O it O is O partially O subsidized O by O the O governments O of O Croatia O Slovenia O and O Italy.
